Does my subscription give me access to the Looker Studio Connector?

To use the connector, your plan must contain the Looker Studio feature. You can check if this is the case by looking for your Data Studio API key: if you have access to the Looker Studio connector, you'll be able to find your key using the steps described just below.

If you have any doubts or if your plan does not contain the Looker Studio feature, click on the blue button at the bottom right of your screen and ask to speak with the sales team (from the suggested answers).


Where can I find my Looker Studio access key?

Note that the access key for Looker Studio is different from the Oncrawl API key. Having the API feature does not imply access to Data Studio.

  • In Oncrawl, click on your user icon in the top right corner to open the dropdown user menu.

  • Click on Workspace.

  • Click on Tokens in the left-hand sidebar.

You'll need this key to access the connector in Looker Studio.

You can also find the Looker Studio access key in the crawl settings when you activate the export of all future crawls with a given crawl profile.

How can I select the Oncrawl data to send to Looker Studio?

There are two ways to get crawl data from Oncrawl via the Looker Studio connector:

  • Send new analyses to Looker Studio as they're created:
    - From the project home page, click Set up a new crawl.
    - Scroll down to the Analysis section.
    - Expand the Export to settings.
    - Tick the Enable export to Data Studio checkbox.

    Once the crawl has been launched and completed, the data will be available via the connector.

This will automatically connect all future analyses with this crawl profile to Looker Studio.

  • Send completed analyses to Looker Studio after they've finished:
    - From the project home page, scroll down to the list of crawl reports (at the bottom of the screen).
    - Choose the crawl you want to be available in Looker Studio and click on the three buttons on the right side of the screen. This opens a menu.
    - Click on Export to Data Studio. The screen will update automatically and you will see that the export is in progress.

    If your crawl is archived, you won't see this option; you'll need to unarchive it first.

The time it takes to export data from Oncrawl to Looker Studio depends on the number of URLs that have been crawled.

Note: Please wait until the export has finished to view the data in Looker Studio. If no exports have been completed yet, you'll see an error when you try to add a chart in Looker Studio. This error will be resolved automatically when the export finishes.

What data is available?

How does the connector's quota work?

Also from the Workspace page (Summary tab), you have access to new information to track your Looker Studio quota. The operation is the same as for your quota of URLs :

  • It works on a monthly basis.

  • The quota is updated every month, on the anniversary date of your subscription.

Look for the line: Monthly Data Studio query usage. You have up to 1TB per month.

For example, if you see 1.82 GB of 1 TB, it means that you have consumed 1.82 GB out of your monthly total of 1 TB.

Are there any tips and tricks?

Counting URLs

The best way to get the number of URLs in a crawl is: URL count with a filter for the Crawl_ID you're interested in. Why? This method contains the least amount of calculation behind the scenes!


If you share a report created in Looker Studio, consider setting the Data Source to use Viewer Credentials. This prevents any calculations carried out by viewers from affecting your quota.

Scraping / Custom fields

If you need to change the type of a custom field (example: text to number, or number to date) after sending it to Data Studio, you should create a new field. Changing a custom field's type in Oncrawl after its data has been sent to Looker Studio can prevent the field from working in Looker Studio.


What does a null value mean?

Sometimes you might see a null value in Looker Studio reports.

Generally, we show a "null" when the information isn't available for the Oncrawl field you asked for. This often happens if the URL wasn't crawled. Here are a few of the many reasons that something like this might happen:

  • Oncrawl knows about the URL but there was a nofollow on the link to the page (and your crawl settings respect nofollow directives)

  • Oncrawl knows about the URL because it was in a sitemap, but not in the crawl

  • Oncrawl knows about the URL but it is redirected (3xx status)

  • Oncrawl knows about the URL, but didn't get to crawl it because the crawl hit a max URL or max depth limit first

Often, a good way to figure out what's going on is to check the Data Explorer or the URL Details for this information on the URL in question.


Is there a template?

Yes, there are templates!

First, we've included a template to get you started. When setting up your connector as a data source, make sure the option "Use report template for new reports" is checked (this is the default state).

When you create a report from the data source page by clicking on Create report, the template we've included will automatically be used:

How can I fix common Looker Studio errors?

Q. I set up and selected the Oncrawl dataset but Looker Studio says it doesn't have any data.

A. This usually occurs if you haven't exported any crawls to Looker Studio, or if you haven't waited for your first export to finish. Usually this is fixed by waiting. You can check the status of the export of older crawls by checking your project home page in Oncrawl.

Q. Oncrawl says I have too many segmentations.

A. In the rare case that you see a message that you can't export a crawl because you have too many segmentations, please contact us using the blue chat button in Oncrawl. We'll help sort you out in just a few minutes.
